Diabetes and hyperglycemia
When your body breaks down the food you eat, it turns it into a substance called glucose. Glucose, which is also called blood sugar, is what your body uses for energy. Hyperglycemia means there are higher levels of glucose in your blood than normal. Diabetes is a disease that happens when the body can’t use the glucose correctly. Hyperglycemia is a symptom of diabetes, but people who have hyperglycemia don’t always have diabetes.

Who is at risk?
Diabetes is more common in people who are overweight, are older, and who have a history of diabetes in their family. Tell your doctor if you have family members who have diabetes.

Diabetes and testing treatment
Your doctor can do a test to check how much glucose is in your blood. This will tell your doctor if you have hyperglycemia. If you already have diabetes, losing weight along with medications could help lower your blood glucose level.Talk to your HCP to see what is right for you.
