Mental health issues, like depression, can be very serious problems for people with HIV. You may experience difficulty performing everyday activities, which can include taking your medication.

Just remember, you healthcare professional (HCP) is always there, ready to help you. Take a look at some of the warning signs for depression listed below. If you have 5 or more of these for at least 2 weeks, make sure you speak with your HCP.

  • Feeling sad or down
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Problems sleeping
  • Trouble focusing or concentrating
  • Unintentional weight gain or loss
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling fatigued or weak
  • Feeling worthless
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior

Help is available
Your loved ones are your first line of defense against depression. Call a friend or family member, and talk things over. Don’t be afraid to reach out. Support groups and peer counseling can be regular outlets and sources of support. Often, it helps to talk things over with people who are facing the same challenges as you.
