The HIV Virus, Nutrition, and Exercise

Eat right and safely

Eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods. Emphasize whole grains, vegetables, lean meat, and fish. It's important to reduce your fat intake. Some medications must be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Some medications should not be taken with specific foods, such as grapefruit juice. Be sure you understand how your HIV regimen  affects your diet.

Get some exercise every day

Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity can help strengthen your cardiovascular system and build muscle. Exercise is also a proven stress buster. Your exercise routine should include both aerobic and anaerobic activities. Aerobic exercise, such as jogging and cycling, helps strengthen your cardiovascular system and build endurance. Exercises such as weight lifting help build lean body mass and strength. As always, talk to your healthcare provider before you start an exercise program.
