HIV Medication

HIV is treated with a combination of medications. You will need to take at least three of these medications daily, as directed by your doctor. It is important to note that some medications contain combinations of two or more antiretroviral agents. These combinations of drugs are called HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy). Note: Not everyone starts HAART therapy right after they receive an HIV diagnosis. Your doctor will tell you when it's time to start treatment.

Your HAART regimen (rëj' ĭ-mən) is an important component of your overall care and treatment plan. Some people choose to take holistic remedies, over-the-counter medications, supplements, vitamins, or home remedies in addition to their HAART medications. These are NOT a substitute for prescription medications prescribed by your doctor. It is important to talk to your doctor if you are taking and before starting any of these products because they may interfere with the effectiveness of your HIV medications. One common supplement that interferes with many HIV medications is St. John's Wort, but there are others. It is also very important to let your healthcare provider know what prescription medications you're taking.
