When to Start HIV Treatment

If you are just learning that you are HIV positive, it does not necessarily mean that you have to start treatment right away. Your overall health, viral load, and CD4 cell count will help your doctor determine the right time to start therapy.

When you do begin HIV therapy, your doctor may choose your combination from several different types (or classes) of HIV medications or ARV therapy, including:

  • NNRTIs (or non-Nucs): Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors
  • NRTIs (or Nucs): Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors
  • PIs: Protease inhibitors
  • Entry inhibitors
  • Integrase inhibitors

EACH ARV WORKS DIFFERENTLY TO HELP CONTROL THE VIRUS
