What VIRAMUNE Does

How does VIRAMUNE work?
VIRAMUNE works inside the CD4+ cell by attaching itself to reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that the HIV virus uses to reproduce. VIRAMUNE prevents viral RNA from being converted to DNA, thereby stopping HIV from replicating (making copies of itself).

Does VIRAMUNE cure HIV infection?
No. Like all anti-HIV medicines, VIRAMUNE is not a cure for HIV and cannot reduce the risk of passing HIV to others. Therefore, it is important to avoid blood contact, never share needles, and continue practicing safer sex by always using latex or polyurethane condoms.

How will my healthcare provider know if VIRAMUNE is right for me?
Before deciding if VIRAMUNE is right for you, your healthcare provider will need to know certain information. Tell your healthcare provider if you

  • Have ever had problems with your liver, such as hepatitis
  • Are on dialysis
  • Have, or are prone to, skin conditions such as rash
  • Are pregnant or want to become pregnant
  • Are breast-feeding your baby
